When Bees Swarm

We have been helping a bunch of customers this morning who noticed bees flying around and looking for a way into their homes. Now and then, these small fellows can even find their way inside by vents, windows, chimneys, doors, and the list goes on! We realise this can be a little scary, especially for families with someone who is allergic to bees.

So, why do bees swarm?  

In reality, swarming is a routine occurrence for bees! It is most common between September and December, when the weather is warming up and nectar and pollen is abundant. As the hive expands, it can become a bit crowded, which drives the bees out in search of a new home.

When do bees swarm?  

You can often see masses between 11 AM and 2 PM during those lovely sunny days.

How long do they stick around?  

A swarm may linger for an hour or two, but there are instances where they may stay for a few days.

Are swarms dangerous?

Bee swarms are, in fact, typically non-aggressive. But if they sense danger, they may come off a little prickly. The longer they stay in one place, the more territorial they can get.

So, what should you do if you see a bee swarm? 

•  Keep children and pets inside until the bees coalesce on a bush or a tree.

• Ensure no one gets too close to the swarm.

• Give a licensed beekeeper a call to assist with their safe removal.

• Be sure to have shoes on outside at all times, just in case!

• Don’t hose them down, poke at them or throw anything at them; this just makes things harder for the experts.
